Abstract

This article examines the development of hadith studies in the Transoxiana region during the 3rd century AH. This study addresses the limited scholarly attention to the contributions of Transoxianian scholars in hadith historiography. Employing an intellectual-historical approach, this research investigates classical literature, biographical works (tarajum), and manuscripts related to local hadith scholars. The findings indicate that Transoxiana possessed distinct characteristics in the evolution of hadith sciences, including: a strong tradition of scholarly journeys (rihlah ilmiah) to major hadith centers; a rigorous emphasis on the validity of isnad through the application of al-Jarh wa al-Taʿdīl; a high enthusiasm for hadith codification; and political and institutional support for scholarly activities. Prominent figures such as Imam al-Bukhari and Imam al-Tirmizi originated from this region and played significant roles in hadith compilation. This article affirms that Transoxiana was not merely a recipient of knowledge from other regions but also a crucial center for the transmission and methodological construction of hadith. Thus, this study contributes to enriching the historical perspective on regional diversity in the development of classical hadith scholarship.
